ABB wins $34 million power order in India

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $34 million order from Power Transmission Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd, for three substations to strengthen the northern Indian region's transmission grid and help deliver clean hydropower to communities in the area.

ABB will design, supply, install and commission the substations, rated at 132 kV (kilovolts), 220 kV and 400 kV respectively, as well as transformers and other major power equipment.

The substations are scheduled for completion in 2011, and will help meet growing demand for electricity with renewable power sources, supporting sustainable economic development in the region. The Srinagar substation in the western Himalayas will be one of the largest of its kind in the area.

“We are pleased help strengthen India’s grid infrastructure and support the development of renewable power resources,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division. “ABB’s technologies will help to ensure safe, reliable and efficient transmission of power in the region.”

Substations are key installations in the transmission and distribution grid that facilitate the transformation of voltage levels and distribution of electrical power. ABB has a global installed base of over 10,000 substations, across a range of voltage levels up to 800 kV.

PTCUL is the power transmission utility responsible for operating and maintaining substations and transmission lines in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand.
